The Southern states start the week with a whole lot of rain. As much as 6″ of rain could fall in some areas by the end of Tuesday.

Monday

As winds from the south pull up tropical moisture, southern states can expect heavy rain Monday. After plenty of rain in southern Texas on Sunday, rain will continue into the early hours Monday.

From eastern Texas to Georgia, showers will occur Monday morning into the evening hours. Major cities such as Houston, New Orleans, Birmingham, and Atlanta could see anywhere from 2-4″ of rain, with locally higher amounts possible.

Thunderstorms are expected with a threat of severe storms as well. Flash flooding with slower moving storms is likely, especially in east Texas and Louisiana where local totals could exceed 6″.

Tuesday

The system responsible for the drenching rains Monday will move east, shifting the rain towards the Mid-Atlantic and the southern states.

The largest totals are expected in southern Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and Virginia. Two day totals from Monday’s and Tuesday’s showers could lead to well over 6″ for some cities, including New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama.

Although thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday, storms are not expected to become severe for most of the region. A low chance of severe storms exist for eastern Georgia and northern Florida.

 Impacts

Residents can expect travel delays both Monday and Tuesday as airlines battle with the weather. Flooding will lead to difficult roadways and closures. Use extreme caution when driving, as flooded roads can quickly become dangerous and life threatening.
