Cliff diving is an extreme sport that attracts athletes from around the world. To test their strength and courage, they dive into the water from platforms up to 27 metres high at six spectacular sites. The aim of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is to determine the best entrant in this kind of sport. The athletes not only dive head-first into the water but also try to grab as many points as possible by performing breathtaking feats.

Weather a deciding factor

The weather experts from Team Morecast will be supporting the divers at this year’s event. Dangers always lie in wait for the athletes during the entire competition. The greatest hazards come from the wind and gusts. Choppy water, fog or rain also harbour risks because the divers have to estimate the depth of the water accurately.

Into the water at 85 km/h

When a diver springs from the cliff he is in free fall and gravity alone governs his speed. Cliff divers in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series hit the surface of the water in just three seconds, at speeds up to 85 km/h. Landing in the water incorrectly from this height has the same effect as diving from 13 metres onto concrete. To prevent injuries, divers must hold their arms straight at their sides and firmly tense their muscles as they enter the water.
